The aircraft were German Heinkels, nine of them. Patrick followed his uncle up the ramp of the nearest aircraft. Anna and Max were already strapped in. Max squealed with delight when he saw Patrick and kept waving until Patrick sat down next to him. He grasped Patrick’s arm and hugged it tightly. Anna beamed.

Simon sat next to Patrick and handed him a pewter hipflask. Patrick took a swig, a long one. Brandy. It tasted divine.

As they reached one thousand feet, Patrick could see a rocky escarpment surrounded by a small lake. The entrance to the facility looked like a mine entrance. Other than a single grass airstrip, nothing else was visible above ground.

Simon spoke over the roar of the engines. ‘Once upon a time, this was a quarantine facility for the German Navy. It was built before the first war. It became a research facility in the 1920s, trialling vaccines for smallpox and influenza. The SS converted it into what it is today in the mid-1930s.’

It made a fine location for a secret laboratory. Patrick had to give them that.

‘I’ve had deep-cover agents here since then, but with increasing SS security measures, it has been harder to communicate with them. The good news is we were able to track down all the telepathic twins in Britain.’

‘All of them?’

‘Yes, all twenty-eight.’

Patrick sighed. The poor children, forced to do the bidding of the SS.

‘How did you know I was here?’

Simon put a finger to his lips. ‘Top secret, my boy. Let’s just say I had some help from a friend of mine … one who isn’t exactly from around these parts.’

Patrick wondered what that meant.

‘The report on the attack on your RAF base tipped me off. My team made the connection with the crash of the lost German bomber and we filled in the pieces from there.’

‘So you helped Rudi and Anna escape?’

‘No, Anna and Rudi acted on their own, and quickly too. The same agent who betrayed the others discovered their father worked for me. They had to get out quickly, so Rudi and his friends in the Luftwaffe hatched a plan to get to Britain.’

‘Are Anna and Rudi British agents?’

‘Two of the best.’

So Anna had not been lying to him. The sheer relief Patrick felt surprised him. ‘How on earth did you manage to pull this off?’ Patrick waved around the aircraft. ‘Are these really Luftwaffe commandoes?’

Simon laughed. ‘Oh, goodness no. They are British Royal Marines wearing German uniforms. Only the group with the colonel are real Luftwaffe.’

‘The aircraft?’ Patrick asked with a smile.

‘Rebuilt from airframes shot down early in the war in France. We shipped them back to Britain and restored them.’

Patrick shook his head in admiration. ‘So where are we going now?’

‘Sweden. The marines will stay in Sweden for future operations, and the aircraft will be dispersed and hidden again at SOE facilities in the Swedish countryside. We will split the other civilians into small groups and get them back to Britain by submarine.’

Patrick wondered how much he really knew about his uncle.
